Laboratory accreditation is the formal recognition of an organization’s technical competency to perform specific tests or calibrations. It also assures that the organization maintains an unbroken chain of traceability for the standards used to perform testing or calibration. Accreditation is given to those laboratories that can demonstrate an on-going competence in their field of testing or calibration as it pertains to the requirements of ISO/IEC 17025: General Requirements for the Competence of Testing and Calibration Laboratories. Accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 requires that the laboratory meets the management and technical system requirements of the standard. It also requires that the laboratory have adequate equipment and technical personnel to perform the testing or calibration.
